The Translatress: The Role of the Feminist Translator

Abstract

Translation has often been viewed as second rate and is often associated with women and gendered stereotypes. Feminist translation aims to change these patriarchal views as well as bring gender and translation issues to the forefront. By using translation as a collaborative effort and to their advantage, feminists allows for the female identity to be heard and gives the translator visibility. By looking at French feminism in connection with feminist translation, we can see just what these translators hope to accomplish. Focusing on the Quebecois Nicole Brossard's novel, Mauve Desert, and subsequent translation by Susanne de Lotbinière-Harwood, in association with some other translations of Brossard's works, will show the various ways feminist translation seeks to change the way women and translation are viewed. By doing so, feminist translators are also attempting to overcome and subvert the repressive patriarchal language that dominates society.
